Movement-Generalized Minimalist Grammars

چکیده

A general framework is presented that allows for Minimalist grammars to use arbitrary movement operations under the proviso that they are all definable by monadic second-order formulas over derivation trees. Lowering, sidewards movement, and clustering, among others, are the result of instantiating the parameters of this framework in a certain way. Even though weak generative capacity is not increased, strong generative capacity may change depending on the available movement types. Notably, TAG-style tree adjunction can be emulated by a special type of

Late Merge as Lowering Movement in Minimalist Grammars

Minimalist grammars can be specified in terms of their derivation tree languages and a mapping from derivations to derived trees, each of which is definable in monadic second-order logic (MSO). It has been shown that the linguistically motivated operation Late Merge can push either component past the threshold of MSO-definability. However, Late Merge as used in the syntactic literature can be e...

Grammar Size and Quantitative Restrictions on Movement

Recently is has been proved that every Minimalist grammar can be converted into a strongly equivalent single movement normal form such that every phrase moves at most once in every derivation. The normal form conversion greatly simplifies the formalism and reduces the complexity of movement dependencies, but it also runs the risk of greatly increasing the size of the grammar. I show that no suc...

Disentangling Notions of Specifier Impenetrability: Late Adjunction, Islands, and Expressive Power

In this paper we investigate the weak generative capacity of minimalist grammars with late adjunction. We show that by viewing the Specifier Island Condition as the union of three separate constraints, we obtain a more nuanced perspective on previous results on constraint interaction in minimalist grammars, as well as the beginning of a map of the interaction between late adjunction and movemen...

Dependency Structures Derived from Minimalist Grammars

This paper provides an interpretation of Minimalist Grammars [16,17] in terms of dependency structures. Under this interpretation, merge operations derive projective dependency structures, and movement operations introduce both non-projectivity and illnestedness. This new characterization of the generative capacity of Minimalist Grammar makes it possible to discuss the linguistic relevance of n...

A probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars

This paper describes a probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars. Top-down parsers have the great advantage of having a certain predictive power during the parsing, which takes place in a left-to-right reading of the sentence. Such parsers have already been well-implemented and studied in the case of Context-Free Grammars (see for example [Roa01]), which are already top-down, but th...
